A QuantityType is a grouping of similar quantitative measurements used to represent how a product’s size, volume, or quantity is expressed.

Why Quantity Types Matter

QuantityTypes support unit normalization, ensuring consistent interpretation across the catalog. Whether you’re calculating price per unit, powering substitutes, or optimizing filters, QuantityTypes form the foundation of standardized quantity logic.

Untyped Size Data Cannot Be Compared

'12 oz' and '340 g' are the same weight, but without a Quantity Type that defines both as Weight measurements, no comparison or price-per-unit calculation is possible.

Substitution Cannot Match on Size

Without typed quantity dimensions, a substitution engine cannot find the 'closest size' for an out-of-stock product. It can only substitute within the same category — not within the same size tier.

Price-Per-Unit Is Impossible Without Typed Units

Calculating price per ounce across products with differently typed size data is impossible without a Quantity Type that normalizes all weights to a common base unit.

How Quantity Type Works

Each QuantityType reflects a unit of measurement commonly used for comparison, substitution, or merchandising. Grouping quantities into types allows Prodx to normalize units across products and categories—making it easier to calculate product equivalency, substitution logic, and unit-based pricing.

Quantity Type defines the class of a measurement — its physical dimension (Weight, Volume, Count), its allowable units, and its base unit for normalization and comparison.

Enables Price-Per-Unit Calculation
With typed Quantity Types, Prodx can normalize all weights to a base unit and compute price per ounce, price per liter, or price per count across every product in a category.

Powers Size-Aware Substitution
The Substitutes API uses Quantity Types to match substitutes within the same size tier. A 12 oz product substitutes to another 12 oz product — not a 32 oz one — because the type governs the match.
